Blast From The Past – Heath McDonough

Chiswick RFC former loose head prop/runaway freight train takes trip down memory lane. In our weekly interviews with former players, we caught up with Heath J McDonough.

Name: Heath McDonough

Years with Chiswick RFC: 2015 – 2017

Clubs: Edendale RFC, Dunedin RFC, Wellington RFC, Chiswick RFC and Cromwell RFC. As you can see I am a drifter.

Position: Consistently played at prop although I consistently aspired to play in the back row…

Current role at Chiswick RFC: Has been / washed up. I have officially hung up the boots for good in NZ.

How did a lad from Dunedin end up in beautiful Chiswick?

My now wife decided I was a narrow minded hick and needed to see the world. Best thing I did.

Most memorable Chiswick moment(s)?

The first time I played for the first team: going to Dover to play 2 minutes at the end of the game. This was a great intro into the first team.

The best game I played was when we won the Middlesex Cup in May 2016. Was one of my most enjoyable experiences on a rugby pitch!

I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at Chiswick. Such a different club culture compared to Country Club footy in NZ.

Shane Donaldson had a big influence on me while I was there – highly dedicated man and always willing to help out. Great guy. I can give him credit for delivering me a couple of un-plucked ducks when I was at the club. I actually took these into an unsuspecting elderly clients home while at work for the NHS…

Best player you played with at Chiswick?

Adam Ross – consistent and had the ability to win games for us.

Is it true you used to train during the winter in just a singlet and a pair of shorts?

This is indeed true. Your version of winter isn’t much different to that of Southern New Zealand.

What do you wish to see from Chiswick RFC in the future?

I wish to see Chiswick continue to flourish as a solid club where it doesn’t matter who you are, there is a place for you.
